Editorial: Minuteman speaks at JCU about illegal immigration

On Tuesday evening, co-founder of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps Chris Simcox, spoke at John Carroll University. Simcox, whose volunteer group works to secure the U.S. border from illegal immigration, spoke about citizenship, civic duty and liberty. Hosted by the John Carroll University Conservatives group, the event brought out people who were both supportive and against the actions of the Minutemen. Although students’ views differed drastically, many students and community members were peaceful in their protests and should be applauded for their efforts in speaking out.

While the work of the Minutemen is controversial and has stirred debate about its legality, hosting Simcox proved to be a good move by the JCU Conservatives. The event fueled discussions and stimulated current social questions. Those who disagreed with the work of the Minutemen also attended the event and voiced their opinions.

This type of open discussion was productive. Although some students became irritated and hostile, others were diplomatic on commenting on the various issues being presented.
Regardless of what an individual’s view may be on Simcox’s visit, it is encouraging to see students embracing their First Amendment right of free speech. Clubs should continue to invite guests to speak about various social and political issues. Having this diverse range of speakers is educational, and also provides contrasting perspectives to help inform students.
