Over winter break, the Corbo/Cardio Fitness Center underwent a massive $175,000 face-lift that renovated and updated much of the facility. The center received new carpeting, fresh paint, weight machines and TVs on all the cardio machines.

The renovation, which was funded by the Student Activity Fee and University budget, improved the safety of the facility and the general appeal to getting in shape. It was a smart and much needed improvement by the administration.

Prior to the restoration, much of the equipment was packed closely together. Students had difficulty maintaining a safe distance between themselves and others to work out. Tripping on a free weight or bar was a hazard. Additionally, much of the old equipment was rusted and worn.

However, with the introduction of new equipment and strategic placement, the fitness center offers ample room and specific storage areas to place equipment while not in use. The addition of TVs on cardio machines offers entertainment appeal for those who have difficulty working out for a long period of time. “I feel the changes will have a positive impact on students using the facility and hope that more students will be attracted to use the facility,” explained Sandy Howard, director of recreation.

The improvements made to the facility over winter break will also prove to be beneficial not just for current students, but prospective students as well. A brand new fitness center will help John Carroll University to stay competitive among other colleges’ facilities and entice students looking at the University.
The University is taking the appropriate strides to update important areas of the campus.
