Sex and the City: The girls are back in town
Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall come together again to bring fans ‘Sex and the City: The Movie,’ in theaters on May 30.
It has been four long years since the beloved, revered and adored “Sex and the City” television show went to reruns. The show was a cultural phenomenon, inspiring bolder fashion choices, a love of the Cosmopolitan drink and cementing the status of Manolo Blahnik shoes forever.
It inspired books like “He’s Just Not That Into You” by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, and it brought fresh popularity to the “Sex and the City” books by author Candice Bushnell. And now, much to the relief of fans everywhere, the long-awaited movie is due out May 30 in theaters nationwide.
“Sex and the City” was not just another television show; it was a way of life and a new way of looking at modern working women. Similar to what “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” was for our parents’ generation, “Sex and the City” was for our generation, albeit the latter proved to be far more salacious and scandalous. The show is viewed by many as a ground-breaking TV show that re-invented the way women feel about sex, their lives, their careers, their significant others and, most importantly, their friends.
“Sex and the City” ran for six consecutive seasons, from 1998 to 2004. Proving its innovative ability and captivating appeal are the multiple Emmys and Golden Globe awards that the show has garnered.
The show takes place in Manhattan and centers on the lives of four friends: journalist and dreamer, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker); art gallery worker and hopeless romantic, Charlotte York (Kristin Davis); publicist and sexual revolutionary, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall); and lawyer and sarcastic realist, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon).
Together, these women explored life in the big city, discovered new relationships, realized the importance of friendship and endured tests of character, all while looking fabulous and having as much fun as possible.
“Sex and the City: The Movie” almost did not get made. Regarding reasons for the film’s delay in production, Variety magazine said, “The picture got close to happening about two years ago, but progress halted when Cattrall backed away. She wanted script control and a salary close to that of Parker, who was more highly paid than the others because she was co-executive producer of the series. Whatever tensions existed are gone now.”
Those working on “Sex and the City: The Movie” have been tight-lipped about the plot, but Sarah Jessica Parker let a few details slip in Vegas recently when she was accepting the ShoWest Vanguard Award.
According to the show’s Web site on hbo.com, Parker said, “What we tried to do is it’s a grown-up movie and I think those people that have seen it have been very surprised.” She said, “There’s a seriousness about something that happens in this movie, and it’s really about real life and your own complicity and disappointments and the necessity of friends at certain points, but really, as a grown-up to really take care of yourself,”
The movie is already being hyped, with trailers appearing on television and Fergie’s new single for the film sound track, “Labels or Love,” is enjoying radio airplay. While details of the plot have been kept tightly under wraps, there are rumors that one of the four women will die, someone will have a child and there will be a wedding.
What is known for sure is that Mr. Big is back, Sarah Jessica Parker went through about 80 costume changes and the paparazzi constantly surrounded the set, prompting Parker to call it “madness.”
We can only hope that “Sex and the City: the Movie” will deliver for fans everywhere and only heighten the show’s legacy, rather than tarnish it.
But as any true “SATC” fan knows, it is impossible for the movie to be bad, because more “Sex and the City” is always a good thing.
