Uniting under Hate

November 10th, 2016

For better or for worse, Americans elected Donald J. Trump as the next President of the United States on November 8 in one of the most divisive elections in history.

If anything, this election proved that there is intense division and hate that is rampant in our country. Americans elected a candidate that openly encouraged racism, sexism and general hate in order to get elected.

He exploited our differences in the face of unity under his leadership. Voters of all ages, races, gen- ders and locations in our country divided almost perfectly along seemingly superficial lines, bring- ing our division that has long been latent into the public focus. And, capitalizing on the hate and the divisions within our society, he found a way to be- fuddle the American political system and claim for himself the highest office in the country.

However, we can learn from this election. We at The Carroll News urge the John Carroll community to unite in the face of the opposition in order to face the problems head on and conquer them in order to make a better, brighter America.

This election focused so much on what made us different. We need to instead focus on what makes us the same. Unity does not begin in the Oval Office. Unity begins when we look inside of ourselves and see that we are all Americans.

Once we do that, only then can we begin to make true change in America. Right now, it certainly isn’t on the path to greatness.
