On April 16, at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, the battle between John Carroll University and Otterbein University for the undefeated title commenced.
While fans enjoyed a long match in the spring sunshine, JCU enjoyed a victory, winning the match, 8-1. The victory pushes JCU’s record to 9-3, including a perfect 5-0 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
JCU dominated the doubles competition beginning with the freshmen duo of Lauren O’Malley and Madisyn Rini’s 8-5 decision over Otterbein’s junior Rylie Markle and senior Adrien Leatherwood. Senior Catherine Engel celebrated her Senior Day with partner sophomore Jennifer Stroyne by driving home another 8-5 win.
Recent pairing sophomore Nicolette Bourlas and junior Katherine Devine won a close match against freshman Sophie Allen and sophomore Emily Quill, 9-7.
Singles also added to the victory. In the #1 match, O’Malley had a straight set winner, as did Rini at #2, Engel at #4 and Devine at #5. In the #6 match Stroyne had a longer match, going into a tiebreak in the third set, but came out on top in the final frame, 12-10.
