The John Carroll men’s tennis team opened their season with a solid showing at the Oberlin Invitational this past weekend.
The Blue Streaks, led by the sophomore duo of reigning Ohio Athletic Conference player of the year, Jad Abdul-Aal, and Kyle Mollison, competed in three rounds of singles play and two rounds of doubles. Overall, John Carroll posted a 14-7 record in the singles matches and split the doubles matches, going 3-3.
Unexpectedly, it was Mollison and not Abdul-Aal who posted the best singles record for the Blue Streaks. Mollison posted a 3-0 record with all three victories coming against rival Baldwin-Wallace Wallace University. Abdul-Aal still showed flashes of why he was named OAC player of the year in 2013, going 2-1 in singles, with victories against Case Western Reserve University and the hosts, Oberlin College. The Blue Streaks would finish the weekend with six players who posted a 2-1 record on the weekend.
In the doubles matches, the tandem of freshman Tyler Cole and sophomore Alex Guthrie had the best showing for JCU, going 2-0 vs. Baldwin Wallace. The aforementioned pair of Mollison and Abdul-Aal split a pair of doubles matches, falling to Baldwin Wallace but bouncing back to beat Oberlin.
The Blue Streaks look to build on their success at Allegany College on September 23 and at the ITA Regionals in Kalamazoo, Michigan from September 26-28.
