Swimming and Diving
The John Carroll University men’s swimming and diving team began last weekend with a 138-104 loss on the road at Oberlin College on Jan. 21, but quickly turned their weekend around with a win at the Johnson Natatorium over visiting Hiram College, defeating the Terriers by a convincing score of 138-84 to earn the non-league win.
Seniors Nick Grady and Max Wilberding were big contributors to the winning effort, as both won their respective events and helped the Blue Streaks improve their overall record in the 2010-2011 campaign to four wins and six losses.
The women’s swimming and diving team followed the same pattern as the men’s team, dropping their first meet of last weekend at Oberlin College by a score of 149-82. However, just as the men did, the women rebounded and followed the loss with a win against Hiram College at home, winning by a dominating score of 137-76. The Blue Streaks have three more regular season meets before the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships begin on Feb. 17 at the University of Akron.
The John Carroll University wrestling team is coming off of a tough loss to the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears but look to rebound and turn their season around after beginning the season with a record of three wins and five losses.
The Blue Streaks were off to a solid start to their dual match against ONU (1-1, 9-3) as the teams split the first four head-to-head matches, but the Polar Bears ended up pulling out the win, defeating JCU by a score of 26-9. Freshman Kenny Locsei won in impressive fashion in his match in the 149-pound weight class, defeating his opponent by a score of 8-1.
Senior Kevin Nycz and redshirt sophomore Bryan Steinmetz also picked up wins for the Blue Streaks, winning their matches by scores of 3-2 and 12-9, respectively. Following the Blue Streaks meet against the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, the team will travel to Wheaton, Ill. to compete in the Pete Willson Invitational which begins tomorrow afternoon. From there, the Blue Streaks will have only three more regular season meets before the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships take place on Feb. 26 at ONU.
Indoor Track and Field
The John Carroll University men’s indoor track team returned from the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-January Meet last weekend finishing in third place out of eight teams. Sophomore Vince Kopen contributed to the third place finish as he finished in the top five in pole vaulting. Sophomores Anthony Colbert and Mike Minjock also played important roles in the third place finish, as Colbert won the 500 meter dash and Minjock also posted a first place finish in the long jump event.
The women’s team also fared well in the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-January Meet as they took fourth place in a seven-team field. Sophomore Tara Knight placed third in the 500 meter run and senior Katie Skelly finished fourth in the event as both helped the Blue Streaks on the day. Junior Cassandra Figueroa chipped in a fourth place in the triple jump, clearing over nine meters.
