Women’s golf season preview

September 17th, 2009

So far:

The Blue Streaks began their season a week after the men’s team, and had pretty good success for such a young team.

In the two-day event, they were tied for sixth place in a ten-team field after the first round.

However, a rough day two dropped them back two slots to an eighth place finish.

Freshman Jackie Leuby was the top finisher for the Blue Streaks, coming in 18th place. Redshirt freshman Ashley Pettibon and sophomore Kristen Courney tied for 22nd.

What to look for:

This weekend, Coach Matt Lenhart’s team will host their annual fall tournament at Fowler’s Mill Golf Course in Chesterland.

Last year, the Blue Streaks took second in the four-team event. The Blue Streaks had two golfers place in the top seven, but they’ve since graduated.

This year, JCU will look to improve their finish in the two-day event. While it may be the home course for John Carroll University, it is a young team  with little collegiate golf experience.

Who to watch:

On a team that is composed of one senior, one sophomore and six freshman, there is little track record.

Still, freshman Jackie Leuby was nothing short of impressive in her first collegiate golf match.

At the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College, she fired an 85 in her opening round. Only nine players in the 65-player field recorded a better total.

She slipped a little bit to a 91 in the second round, but it was clearly an encouraging sight to see a newcomer play so well.
